Convert Maglite to LED - 20 Hour battery life (HIGH POWER!)

LED Lanterns: Versatile, Safe, and Efficient   by Karl Kelley

In 1909, William C. Coleman invented and began manufacturing a portable table lamp that many of us today would recognize as the Coleman gasoline lantern. Lantern technology has evolved from kerosene and gasoline, to propane gas, followed a few years ago by battery powered fluorescent lamps and more recently by the ultra efficient and long lasting battery powered LED Lantern.

Though only recently becoming a part of the consumer market, LED lanterns, lamps and emergency lighting fixtures have been around for many years. Recreational equipment manufacturers like The Coleman Company have improved their products significantly to increase light output and battery life, and enhance the portability and convenience of these versatile light sources. Improvements in battery and LED technology have helped to bring the cost down dramatically. An LED lantern with a battery life of 60-150 hours that puts out enough light to read a paperback book can be purchased for under $30.

Why the growing popularity of these lanterns? The Number One reason is safety. An LED lantern cannot cause a fire like a fuel-fired lantern will. And carbon monoxide poisoning is no threat with a lantern that does not burn conventional fuel. As a result these lanterns can be burned all night in a closed tent or camper without fear of fire or CO poisoning.

Many a young child has burned his or her fingers on fuel-fired lanterns. LED lanterns are cool to the touch and will not burn the tender fingers of young children who accidentally (or even intentionally) grab them. It is impossible for an upended lantern to cause a fire. Smokey the Bear loves LED lanterns!

LED lanterns are lightweight and convenient. No need to carry propane cylinders or liquid fuel along with the lamp. Batteries (usually D-cells) are necessity of course, but it's unlikely that batteries will cause a fire or explosion! And even with four D batteries, an LED lantern weighs less than a fuel-fired one.

LED lanterns are versatile. In addition to their typical uses for camping, they can be used in nighttime emergencies, they can replace candles and hurricane lamps in power outages, and an LED lantern can be used as a safety light for walking outside at night. Even some indoor lighting can be replaced with LED lanterns. Some examples include end table lamps, reading lamps, or bedside table lamps. Porches and gazebos can be lit with these lanterns as well. They emit no sound, odor, or noxious fumesâ
