Frequently Asked Questions...
Are there any alcoholic beverages that contain sliver or gold flakes?
I was reading about collidial silver poisoning and i was just wandering if there were any drinks that contained this. A long time ago I thought i had seen one with silver flakes floating around in it. I wonder if you can get poisoned from this too.
Answer:
goldwasser contains gold flakes and originates from Gdansk in Poland. It is based on the traditional northern european drink of Kummel, which is made from caraway seeds.Goldwasser is flavoured with both caraway and aniseed, although some brands add a citrus flavour, either lemon or orange.
I know there was at one time a silver version called silberwasser, which could be what you are thinking of. There was also a French version called Liquer d'Or, which is no longer available.
The inspiration behind these drinks is supposed to be the great Catalan physician Arnaldo de Vilanova who, in the thirteenth century (not sure on the exact year)is reputed to have cured the Pope of a dangerous illness by giving him a herbal elixir containing specks of gold. This act saved his hide when the Inquisition suspected him of witchcraft.
