Frequently Asked Questions...
Dry socket and having part of bone filed down?
I had a tooth extracted exactly two weeks ago today. I thought that it was healing fine. About a week ago the extraction site started hurting and I could also feel like a piece of bone or something there too. It still isn't better so I went in to see my dentist today. My dentist said that I have a dry socket and he packed it. I am to go back on Tuesday to have it repacked. Also that piece of bone I thought I was feeling was definitely a piece of bone according to my dentist. He said that he will need to cut into the gum and file that piece of bone down and then stitch it back up. Does this bone filing thing hurt? What kind of foods should I avoid? How long doesit take a dry socket to heal? Thanks!
Answer:
well i had almost the same thing happen and unfortunately i didn't have the best outcome. i had a tooth removed, a wisdom tooth and i didn't get dry socket from it, but what happened was the roots of my tooth both pointed in the same direction which made it hard to pull out, which one root actually broke off and he had to cut it out and then in turn file down on my jaw bone. i don't remember the filing as being too painful, but the part that hurt for me was this chip of bone that was stuck down there for almost 3 months, all the while working it's way to the surface, and gumline. it felt like a peice of popcorn stuck for a while, but once it finally came out, what a relief! it was big though. and pretty gross... but everything healed fine other then that. but lucky for you, your piece already came out so that's good. from what i'm told, dry socket only lasts maybe 4-5 days. but when you have a tooth pulled they should of told you how to avoid that, any sucking motions, like drinking out of straws, and smoking and all that. as far as foods go, i'd stick with things that don't take a lot of chewing, yogurt, pudding, canned fruits, jello, soups... just so you're such nothing gets down in there and trapped which can cause an infection. but if it's packed and it'll stay that way until tuesday, you should be safe from anything getting in there. i wish you luck! i'm sure it'll be fine... i hope i helped a little, if not, just know i know how you feel!
