Caregiving

Family members and friends of brain injury survivors are often called upon to provide for the special needs of  survivors.

Often the entry into one or more special needs areas is found after a "caregiver" attends one or more support groups and learns how others are addressing these specials needs.

In addition our members have identified these organizations, which may be of further assistance:

The Well Spouse Foundation, a new organization offering help to spouses.

National Parent Network on Disabilities, offering help to parent of disabled children

Recovery Awareness Foundation.  The Recovery Awareness Foundation is a small group that tries to assist in locating medical support, help defray medical bills, and aid in obtaining medical supplies, equipment, and medications not covered by insurance.

Careview, a site dedicated to helping find an assisted living or skilled nursing facility

CARF Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission, a private, not-for-profit organization that accredits programs and services in Adult Day Services, Behavioral Health. Employment and Community Services, and Medical Rehabilitation.  CARF also develops and maintains practical and relevant standards of quality for such programs.

Family Caregiver Alliance, a support organization for caregivers of adults with Alzheimer's disease, stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson's disease, ALS and related brain disorders.  This site has recently announced that The California Endowment has granted funding for Link2Care, a groundbreaking new Internet program to support family caregivers.  This program is the first program in the country to use the Internet to provide online information, services and connections to caregiving families on demand, utilizing existing community service systems.  Enrollment in Link2Care is scheduled to begin in November 1999. The program is free to caregivers.

GriefNet, an Internet community of persons dealing with grief, death, and major loss.  (May take longer to load.)

Caregiver Survival Resources, Merlene and Jim Sherman's site.  The Shermans work extensively with caregivers and professionals about caregiving issues at conferences, seminars, and workshops.

Americans with Disabilities Act/Olmstead Decision provides information on this decision and describes the steps the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) are taking to implement its provisions.

TBI Help Desk for Caregivers which lists a number of sites that caregivers might find useful.

Today's Caregiver, and e-magazine for caregivers.

Caregiver-Information.comMike and Michelle's site (operated from Toledo OH) which contains a wealth of links and caregiver information.
