NVBIA is a 100% volunteer organization. We are a chapter of the non-profit Brain Injury Association of Virginia - one of the 45 state chapters of the national Brain Injury Association, Inc.
2004-2006 officers were elected in June 2004.
NVBIA maintains a helpline operated by volunteers to respond to inquiries from survivors and their families.
NVBIA provides bimonthly support group meetings for brain injury survivors, family members and friends on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month (except August). They are held at Falls Church High School (7:30-9:00PM). In addition we publish a list of all brain injury support groups in the metropolitan D.C. area and of stroke support groups in the Northern Virginia area..
NVBIA publishes a quarterly newsletter that offers information of value to the brain injured community. NVBIA members also receive the BIAV newsletter. (The newsletter is stored in Adobe Acrobat. If you decide to view it, be prepared to wait.)
NVBIA maintains a website at http://www.nvbia.org which provides information on brain injury and services available in the metropolitan Washington, DC area.
NVBIA advocates for legislation and funding of programs at local and state levels. In 2000 we developed an Action Plan for inclusion in the Brain Injury Association of Virginia's statewide plan. We hope that this activity will be the basis for future legislation and advocacy efforts! NVBIA Comments were recently reviewed by a group determining needs for the disabled and found to be very helpful.
NVBIA participates in community events, such as fairs and education programs that increase brain injury awareness and promote prevention.
NVBIA conducts a yearly conference, “Journey Toward Independence” that brings together prominent professionals and members of the brain injured community to focus on issues of concern to all. This year's conference was a tremendous success due to the efforts of our volunteers. "Journey - 2002" planning meetings are on the second Wednesday of each month (from 1 - 3 pm) and rotate locations between Inova Mount Vernon Hospital and Brain Injury Services. If you'd like to work on "Journey" call the NVBIA Helpline for further information or send an e-mail.
NVBIA, in cooperation with Brain Injury Services, sponsors the Alan Mayer award, which is presented to an individual who has displayed a commitment to advocacy for survivors of brain injury and their families.
NVBIA promotes activities for brain injured survivors by providing scholarships to such activities as Camp Bruce McCoy, Survivors Council meetings, and brain injury conferences. Our association works closely with county, state, and local organizations to promote activities for a person with brain injury.
