A Journey Toward Independence is an annual conference on brain injury that provides support and information to survivors, family members, friends, medical/rehabilitation professionals and students from the metropolitan Washington, DC area. Joining NVBIA as co-sponsors for our 2006 conference are Inova Rehabilitation Center at Inova Mt. Vernon Hospital, Brain Injury Services, and Icon Community Services. This year’s conference will be our twenty-first consecutive “Journey”. First conducted in 1986 as a gathering of family members of survivors of brain injury, “Journey” has grown over time to attract between 200-250 attendees—roughly 1/2 of whom are survivors of brain injury.
Exhibit Hall
The focal point of activity between sessions and during breaks will be in Dewberry Hall, where exhibitors will provide information and resources, lunch will be served, and a reception will be held.
Location
The conference will be held at the George W. Johnson Center at George Mason University, Fairfax VA 22030. The University is located at the intersection of Route 123 and Braddock Road, approximately six miles west of the Capital Beltway. Signs will be posted throughout the campus to direct you to the Johnson Center and the conference. Directions to the conference and a map of the site will be sent to you with your confirmation letter.
Request for Accommodations
If you require special accommodations, be sure to fill out the Request for Accommodations section on the registration form and submit no later than October 13th to allow for acquisition and scheduling. (We cannot guarantee requests made later than October 13th.) The conference provides a room for survivors to rest. Tape recorders are allowed; however, ask permission of the program speaker before recording a presentation. If you have questions regarding accommodations, leave your questions on the NVBIA Helpline at 703-569-1855.
Parking
Parking will be available in the parking deck on Mason Drive, a short walk to the Johnson Center. Validation stickers will be available at the registration desk. Without a sticker, you must pay for parking.
Transportation
To reach George Mason University by Metro, take the Orange Line to the last stop (Vienna-George Mason University). From there, Fairfax County Cue bus service can be taken to the campus bus stop for 50 cents each way. If you need transportation from the bus stop to the Johnson Center (approximately 500 yards), indicate your requirement under Request for Accommodations so that arrangements can be made for your pick up.
General Information
NVBIA Scholarships: Limited scholarships are available for survivors who are NVBIA members. Requests should be made to the NVBIA Helpline at 703-569-1855 (or nvbia@aol.com) no later than September 30th.

During JTI each year, the Alan Mayer Award is given to an individual who displays a commitment to advocacy for survivors of traumatic brain injury and their families.
